History Benzie County is located in the northwest region of the state of Michigan, United States. The area that is now Benzie County was originally inhabited by the Odawa and Ojibwe Native American tribes. The first European explorers to visit the area were French fur traders, who arrived in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. In the early 19th century, American settlers began to move into the area, attracted by the abundant natural resources and fertile soil. Benzie County was officially established in 1863, and was named after Joel Benzie, a prominent landowner and politician in the area. The county grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as logging and agriculture became major industries in the region.
