A beautiful Greek Aegean islan

From the hill of Prophet Ilias of Oia, the gaze sinks into the dark waters of the Caldera, touches the petrified lava of the volcano and then turns up, to the white line of houses, which sparkle in the abundant light. Descending towards Perivolos, you will have the feeling of floating between the steep volcanic rocks and the vines that stretch north to the Baxedes by the sea and perched on the terraces rise to the first canvases of Phoenicia and westward to Tholos, the second agricultural settlement of "Apano Meria". The winery of Paris Sigala is also located in Baxedes.

The central marble-paved street with the imposing captains' houses, the cave houses of the ships' crews carved into the aspa, the stairs that descend to the harbors of Ammoudio and Armeni, the dozens of churches with the tributes of the sailors, the canvases and the racidias, bear witness to the history of the well-preserved settlement, when wooden Apanomerite sailing ships crossed the Mediterranean carrying the intoxicating sweet drink vinsanto and returned loaded with timber, porcelain and silverware for the captains' mansions.

If you want to swim, you can go to Baxedi beach, Katharos or for a swim in Ammoudi.

Ammoudi is the port of Oia from where wine was loaded onto ships for export two centuries ago. Access is possible by car, but also on foot from the castle of Oia, going down 235 steps. Trust us, it's not as much as it sounds and eating in its few fish restaurants will pay you back!

There are sixty churches in the area and many of them are photographed on souvenir postcards. The biggest festivals are of Agios Georgios, Stavros, Agios Spyridon, Agios Nikolaos, Agios Savvas and Panagia Platsani.

Overcoming the disasters caused by the economic withering, and the earthquake of 1956, Oia today is alive with life and is a model settlement with modern infrastructure. Freed from the overhead electricity and telephone cables that imprisoned it, it has underground cabling networks, a complete water supply and drainage network, a seawater desalination plant, biological purification units, high-standard tourist infrastructure, while a Conference Center and an open-air amphitheater are under construction. Keeping the charm of another era, harmonious and peaceful, Oia invites you to get to know it.

In Oia there is a regional doctor's office and a pharmacy that operate every day, several ATMs, a post office, KEP and plenty of shops for all tastes.
