On the southern shore of Lake Ontario in Cayuga County

Tucked along the southern shore of Lake Ontario is one the best kept secrets in New York state. Little Sodus Bay was first named "Date-Kea-shote" and "Little Seadose" by the Cayuga and Seneca Indians in the mid 1600's. The early French traders found "Chroutons" a useful landing place to trade with the Cayugas.

By 1872 with the completion of the Southern Central Railroad, the harbor shipping provided transit for wood products, stoves, apples and potatoes. Ice was also a industry developed to cool the milk shipped by rail. The ice handlers became known as experts in the field. With all this going on around the bay, the village prospered. Schools were organized; churches built and new ideas were excepted. Anti-slavery, women's' suffrage and temperance societies were organized.

By the 1880's when the "cottages" were being built in Newport and the 1000's Islands, Fair Haven was also becoming a home-away-from-home for many. The bay was circled with cottages and small summer homes of all types. The NYS Parks Commission purchased the property that has become Fair Haven Beach State Park and in the late 20's and 30's built the present roads, cabins and campsites. Better Homes and Gardens has chosen Fair Haven Beach State Park as on of the 10 best state parks in the country.

Today the ice harvesting business has disappeared along with the shipping and rail roads. Fair Haven is left with the summer cottages and the beautiful bay. The bay is a haven for fishermen and pleasure boaters. The Fair Haven yacht club is known as a safe haven for sailors from near and far. The new nine hole golf course will be expanded in the future and draws golfers from all over the area. The Renaissance Festival is in its 20th year and continues to grow.
