Cayucos History Cayucos is a small beach town located in San Luis Obispo County, California, USA. The area was inhabited by Native American tribes for thousands of years before European settlers arrived in the late 18th century. In 1769, Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá and his expedition camped in the Cayucos area while exploring the California coast. The town's name is derived from the Chumash word "kayukash," which means "canoe landing." During the 19th century, Cayucos was a bustling shipping port and center for agriculture and ranching. The town's first wharf was built in 1872, and it quickly became a hub for shipping lumber, grain, and other goods to San Francisco and other coastal cities.
