Family Activities

Powerscourt Waterfall - This is the highest waterfall in Ireland and it is a wonderful location at which to enjoy a family picnic. With designated picnic areas, a kids playground , which includes a water and sand feature, a unique "space net" and vast areas of green space in which to play. A fantastic place at which to spend a nice, relaxing summer's day.

Greenan Farm Museum and Maze - The Celtic hedge maze is an exciting adventure for all ages. It stands on half an acre and has a viewing platform. Other attractions include a nature trail with ponds, a working farm with animals, and a craft shop with local produce. Our traditional Tea-room serves light lunches and home-baked goodies. Opening times: Easter weekend. Bank holiday Mondays. May & June: Tues.-Sat. July & August: 7 days. Sept. & Oct: Sundays only 10am-6pm.

Brennanstown Riding School - Brennanstown Riding School is situated in the magnificent Hollywood demesne, adjacent to the famous Killruddery Estate. The school has excellent indoor and outdoor facilities with qualified instruction. All levels are catered for and children of all ages are accepted for riding instruction.

Clissman's Horse Drawn Caravans - Clissman's offers the ultimate alternative in family holidays, with a horse and a covered wagon, in which four people can sleep and cook. They also provide quiet, well-schooled horses to travel with the caravans. This truly is a unique experience; with a horse pulling your home, you can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of Wicklow and explore wherever and whenever you wish. If it is activity you are after, head for a village festival (of which there are many throughout the Summer) or a seaside resort. If you like solitude, then you can turn to the mountain valleys and lakes. In a matter of few hours, you can reach glorious sandy beaches, quiet lakes and majestic mountains. You can also stop off wherever you wish along the way in order to rest and perhaps keep the kids occupied.

Devils Glen Holiday Village & Equestrian Village - Devil's Glen is equipped to deal with all levels from beginner right up to advanced riders. There are a range of activities available, including trekking, lead riding, cross-country, hunting and show jumping, amongst other things. With thousands of acres of woodland to explore and with all ages from 4 upwards catered for, this is a wonderful place to bring all the family for an adventurous day out.

Clara Lara Fun Park - Clara Lara is one of the best known fun parks, anywhere in the country. It consists of over 100 acres of adventure playgrounds including tree houses, Tarzan swings, boating, canoeing water slides crazy golf junior go karts….The list just goes on and on! There is also a barbeque and picnic area / restaurant with ample space in which to eat in comfort. This is a fun day out not to be missed if in County Wicklow!

Things to do in Co. Wicklow on rainy days

Eve Studio Pottery - Eve's is the ultimate fun day out for children of all ages, from aged 4 +. At Eve's, children can partake in a paint on pottery class, whereby they can give a piece of pottery their own personal touch. A great way for kids to have some fun and also a great way of learning about the fascinating art of pottery making. There is also the option for kids to partake in pottery making class. This is a great opportunity for your kid to find out all about this great art and also a great opportunity for them to show their artistic streak! Eve is this year running a summer camp from the beginning of June right through to the end of August. Each individual camp runs from Monday - Wednesday inclusive and it consist of a total of 5 hours, 1 1/2 hours on the Monday and Tuesday and 2 hours on the Wednesday. In this course, children learn to both paint on and make pottery. Furthermore, they design a pillowcase which involves painting with fabric paints and then, "Batiking" them.

Wicklow Gaol - This is one of the largest tourist attractions in the county. Hear stories of old as told by the Gaoler himself and by the 1798 rebel held captive in the Gaol, as the experience takes you on a fascinating journey through Irish history. The Gaol also offers you the chance to wander through the cells and listen to the inmates' stories before you embark upon a journey to Botany Bay in Australia aboard the Hell Ship Hercules. The Wicklow Gaol experience come highly recommended and gives a wonderful and informed insight into life in the Gaol, educating children in particular, in a fun and relaxed environment.

National Sea Life Centre - The National Sea Life Museum in Bray is a state of the art, hi -tech marine experience displaying 70 different sea and freshwater species. Everything from congor eels to sharks, giant crabs, seahorses and stingrays making an unforgettable experience. Discover a magical underwater world as you follow a silvery stream from its source to the ocean beyond. Enjoy close encounters at the touch pools with live demonstrations. Enjoy multilevel viewing, featuring hundreds of different sea and freshwater creatures. The Sea life centre is an excellent place at which to spend a few hours and it truly is an exceptional experience. A must see for kids who will learn a great deal about sea life, in a fun environment. Whilst in Bray, the family can also enjoy a trek up to the top of Bray Head, which offers excellent views of the coastline on a nice clear day and is always very popular with kids with a bit of an adventurous side! Bray is also home to Ardmore Studios. Finally, Bray is home to a part of the Wicklow Film Trail, with such films as My Left Foot, Michael Collins and The Commitments shot around the area.

Ballyknocken Country House & Cookery School - Run by chef / proprietor Catherine Fulvio, Ballyknocken Cookery School offers a selection of day, weekend and evening courses with themes such as Gourmet Cooking on a Budget; BBQ, Southern Italian Cuisine, Baker's Delight to name but a few. The emphasis is always on the use of good ingredients, many of which are supplied from the Ballyknocken Farm garden and from the local farmers. There are also cookery course for children from age 7 upwards. What better place to learn how to cook than at the Farmhouse of the Year 2004? Ballyknocken Cookery School also welcomes tour groups, coach series and incentives, where a wide range of courses and fun events are on offer. Packages include a Brown Bread Making Demonstration and morning coffee stop, Irish Stew Making and Lunch to name a few. Guests can make their own breads and scones, Irish Coffees etc.

Dining capacity for 55 guests is available in Ballyknocken House. Incentive packages also available such as team games, archery, clay pigeon shooting, quads, off road driving, traditional music etc. The location of Ballyknocken Cookery School is ideal - en route from Powerscourt Gardens to Glendalough - just 4 minutes by coach from the N11 and 29 miles south of Dublin City Centre.
