In the 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived in the area and established contact with the Calusa. However, the Spanish were unable to conquer the Calusa, who fiercely defended their territory against the intruders. In the 19th century, after the Seminole Wars, the United States government established a military fort in the area, which served as a base for operations against the Seminole Indians.
