Punta Gorda History Punta Gorda is a small city located in Charlotte County, Florida, United States. The area was originally inhabited by the Calusa people, an indigenous tribe that thrived in Southwest Florida for thousands of years. The Calusa were known for their complex social structure and their impressive engineering feats, including the construction of canals and waterways. In the 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived in the area and established contact with the Calusa. However, the Spanish were unable to conquer the Calusa, who fiercely defended their territory against the intruders. In the 19th century, after the Seminole Wars, the United States government established a military fort in the area, which served as a base for operations against the Seminole Indians.
