Buena Park

Buena Park is a city located in northwestern Orange County, California, and it has a rich history that dates back to the late 1800s. Originally, the area was inhabited by the Tongva people, who lived off the land and were skilled fishermen and hunters.

In the 1850s, settlers began moving into the area, and it was named Buena Park, which means "good park" in Spanish. The name reflected the city's pleasant climate and beautiful surroundings.

One of the first major developments in Buena Park was the establishment of a railroad depot in the 1880s. The depot served as a major transportation hub, connecting Buena Park to other cities in the region and making it easier for goods and people to move in and out of the area.

During the early 1900s, Buena Park became known for its agricultural industry, particularly for its production of oranges and other citrus fruits. The city was also home to a large dairy industry, and many of the city's early residents were dairy farmers.

In the 1950s, Buena Park underwent significant growth and development, as the post-World War II economy led to a boom in suburbanization. New housing developments were built, and Buena Park became a popular destination for families looking to raise their children in a safe and pleasant environment. Today, Buena Park is a thriving city with a diverse economy and a rich cultural heritage. It is home to several major tourist attractions, including Knott's Berry Farm and Medieval Times, and it continues to be an important transportation hub, with easy access to major highways and public transportation systems. Despite its growth and modernization, Buena Park has maintained its small-town charm and continues to be a desirable place to live, work, and visit.

Northwest of downtown Santa Ana

Whitaker had the economic foresight to bring in Orange County's first industry other than wine making. The Pacific Condensed Milk Company, more commonly known by its brand name as the Lily Creamery, was opened in 1889 and made canned condensed milk. By the middle of the 1890's the Whitaker Family actually helped run the factory, which also produced its own cans and labels. The Creamery developed and supported dairy farming in the early agricultural area. But, to get their products to market, both the Creamery and local farmers needed a rail connection in Buena Park.

The Santa Fe Railroad had arrived in the Southeastern Los Angeles County (now Orange County) in 1887, some ten years after the Southern Pacific Railroad, which in the meantime had fully exploited its monopoly. The competition from the Santa Fe offered relief from exorbitant freight rates spurring economic prospects for the area. Accordingly, land speculation proliferated into what has become known as the "Land Boom of the 1880's". When the Santa Fe did not fulfill a promise to build a depot in Buena Park, Whitaker got the Southern Pacific Depot built and he actually relocated the center of town from the platted area around the Santa Fe tracks south to the Southern Pacific tracks.

Whitaker sames his infant city from the fate of other "paper cities" like Centralia, Savanna, and Orangethorpe that failed when the "land boom went bust" as quickly has it had started. Whitaker not only founded the town of Buena Park, but established a balance between residential, commerical, and industrial development that continues to make the City of Buena Park a success 100 years later.
