Los Cabos, the area at the very tip of the Baja California Peninsula ("cabo" means "cape"), has become a major resort destination. The isolated fishing camps that once catered to a handful of visitors who came in their own private planes or yachts, are now among luxury hotels that dot the coast around two towns - San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas - and especially the 20-mile stretch of coastline that lies between them, known as "the corridor".

The corridor is where many of Los Cabos' major hotels are situated, with the dramatic meeting of the sea and desert inspiring developers and architects to build some of Mexico's most unique beachside resorts.

The town of Cabo San Lucas is only about 30 years old. Originally a fishing village with a population of a few hundred, the town is now growing by leaps and bounds with new first-class hotels, restaurants and shops.

The San Lucas Harbor, home of a world-renowned fishing fleet, has facilities for 250 fishing boats. The docking area, with an open-air public market, is the scene of much activity, especially early in the morning as the fishing parties cast off, and after midday when the boats start returning with their bounty.

Los Cabos' greatest attraction, after its sports, is its natural setting. The warm Sea of Cortez meets the much cooler Pacific Ocean, often creating spectacular rainbows of color. The Pacific side of the beach offers a wonderful sight, but is too dangerous for swimming. Swimmers can enjoy the calmer, clear, water in the Sea of Cortez, also a mecca for snorkelers from around the world.

San Jose del Cabo has a flavor all its own -that of a small Baja California settlement steeped in tradition. Nearly 270-years-old, this semitropical town is not as sleepy as it appears. An important commercial and agricultural center, it grows some of the country's best mangos, avocados and oranges.

The main thoroughfare, Paseo Mijares, is a wonderful place to stroll, with its ancient, ornate stone arches and quaint white and pastel-colored cottages decorated with a profusion of colorful flowers.

Bird lovers and everyone else, will enjoy the estuary - a natural lagoon that's home to some 200 species of birds. It is located next to the Presidente Inter-Continental hotel.

The Arch - Also known as the Arch of Poseidon, this 204-foot rock formation is a symbol of Baja California Sur. During low tide, visitors can walk on an eroded passage through the rocks.

Playa el Medano is the most popular sunning, swimming and people-watching beach in Cabo. And, according to locals, it is world renowned for its annual Easter holiday bikini contest.

Playa Barco Varado is at Kilometer 10 of the Transpeninsular Highway. The sparkling clear tide pools along the shore and the impressive rock formations make this a favorite spot for family outings and hikes.

Playas el Bledito and Buenos Aires have strikingly white sand and open ocean swimming in deep-blue waters. Playa Costa Azul is highly popular among surfers, especially during the summer, when the surf is tops! El Chileno - This is a beautiful extension of beaches. Palmilla - This beautiful beach has blue water and white sand.

From sunning on tropical beaches to hiking through archeological ruins, Mexico is home to such a variety of intriguing sites and activities.
