History

Marietta is a city located in the state of Georgia, United States. It is situated in Cobb County, approximately 20 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta. The history of Marietta dates back to the early 19th century when the area was initially settled.

In 1834, Marietta was founded by a group of individuals led by a judge named Augustus Brevoort Woodward. The city was named after his wife, Mary. The early development of Marietta was influenced by the Western and Atlantic Railroad, which arrived in the area in the 1840s. The railroad played a significant role in the growth and prosperity of the city.

During the Civil War, Marietta was occupied by Union forces in 1864. The city witnessed several battles and skirmishes in its vicinity, including the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Many historic buildings in Marietta served as hospitals for wounded soldiers during this period.

After the war, Marietta experienced a slow recovery. The city's economy diversified, with industries such as textiles, mills, and manufacturing taking root. In the early 20th century, Marietta saw further growth with the arrival of the Southern Polytechnic School (now part of Kennesaw State University) and the Lockheed Martin Corporation, which established a presence in the city.

Marietta's historical significance is preserved through its numerous landmarks and historic sites. The Marietta Square is the heart of the city, featuring a picturesque town square with a courthouse, shops, restaurants, and events throughout the year. The Glover Park Concert Series, held in the square, is a popular summer event.
