Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano rising 1,281 meters above sea level. Currently quiescent, its last eruption occurred in 1944. Vesuvius is considered one of the most dangerous and closely studied volcanoes in the world due to its explosive nature and its proximity to densely populated areas.
