More than 70 exhibit tanks make up Aquarium galleries that include salt and fresh water, the sultry tropics and the frigid d epths of the deep sea, exotic and bioluminescent pinecone fishes and the familiar and popular American lobster. The highlight of all exhibits is the Giant Ocean Tank, a re-creation of a Caribbean coral reef that holds more than 700 animals in its myriad caves and crevices.

For several years the New England Aquarium has provided a crucial link between nature and society, bringing visitors eye-to-eye with the exotic and the familiar. Now, with the 21st century just around the corner, we have strengthened our mission to present, promote, and protect the world of water, redoubled our commitment to conservation, and created a new vision for an established institution. In the new New England Aquarium, four thematic areas will represent the open ocean, edge of the sea, rivers, and lakes. Visitors will begin at the edge of the sea and move to either the ocean or to the freshwater world of lakes and rivers. Familiar New England habitats will serve as the framework for exploring comparable ecosystems around the world.
