History & Context
Grebe Island History Grebe Island is a small, man-made island located on the River Bure, which runs through the village of Horning in Norfolk. The island was created in the early 20th century as part of a project to straighten and deepen the river to make it more navigable for boats and barges. In the years following its creation, Grebe Island became a popular destination for boaters and fishermen, and it was eventually acquired by the Horning Sailing Club in 1963. Today, the island serves as a popular mooring spot for members of the club, as well as a location for events and races. In addition to its recreational use, Grebe Island is also known for its ecological significance. The island and surrounding river are home to a variety of plant and animal species, including rare birds such as the bittern and marsh harrier. The Horning Marshes, which border the island, are also protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to their unique wetland habitats and wildlife.
