Harbor Springs History Harbor Springs is a small city located in Emmet County, in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, USA. The area was originally inhabited by the Odawa tribe, who referred to the place as "Waganakising," meaning "the place of the crooked river." In the early 1800s, white settlers arrived in the area and began building homes and businesses. In 1857, a post office was established, and the settlement was named Harbor Springs. The city's economy was based on logging and fishing until the late 1800s, when it began to transition into a resort community. Wealthy families from Detroit and Chicago built summer homes in the area, attracted by the cool summers and scenic beauty of the region. In 1873, the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad reached Harbor Springs, making it easier for visitors to travel to the area.
