History & Context
Captain William Hilton History Captain William Hilton was an English explorer who is best known for his discovery of Hilton Head Island, a barrier island off the coast of South Carolina that is now a popular resort destination. In 1663, Hilton was commissioned by the Lords Proprietors of Carolina, a group of English noblemen who had been granted a charter to establish a colony in the region, to explore the coast of the new colony. Hilton set sail from Barbados with two ships, the Adventure and the Port Royal, and spent several months mapping the coastline and exploring the rivers and inlets of the region. On April 16, 1663, Hilton and his crew discovered a large, beautiful island that they named "Hilton's Headland" in honor of Hilton himself. The island was later shortened to "Hilton Head" and became an important center of plantation agriculture in the 18th and 19th centuries.
