Iowa City is a city located in Johnson County, Iowa, in the Midwestern United States. It is known for being the first capital city of Iowa, as well as being the home of the University of Iowa.

The area that is now Iowa City was first inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Iowa, Sauk, and Fox. European explorers arrived in the area in the late 1600s, and by the early 1800s, settlers began moving to the region.

In 1839, Iowa City was chosen as the site for the first capital of the Iowa Territory. The first capitol building was constructed in 1840, and the city quickly grew as government officials and other settlers moved to the area. In 1846, Iowa City became the capital of the new state of Iowa, but the capital was moved to Des Moines in 1857.
