One of the largest beaches of the western Algarve
The Algarve region is situated in the south of beautiful Portugal. The scenic coastline of the Algarve spans over 160 kilometres, home to the Atlantic Ocean and many picturesque beaches with large stretches of golden sand, many of which are Blue Flag award holders.
With over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, the Algarve attracts thousands of tourists for all year round holidays either to the beaches or to the many golf courses in this region, there are over 30 within a 15 kilometre radius of the coastline.
The Algarve is reached by flying into Faro airport, which is centrally situated in the region. From most European capital cities the Algarve can be reached in two to three hours.
For five centuries, Arabs occupied the Algarve. This influence can still be seen in the regions architecture, the lattice chimneys and tiles and resort names beginning with ‘Al’.
Popular activities in the Algarve include walking, surfing, golf, tennis, horse riding, cycling and kayaking. There are many other tourist attractions for families such as water parks, zoos, theme parks and boat trips.
Many events take place in the Algarve throughout the year. These vary from festivals, carnivals and sporting events. During the summer, open air concerts, jazz festivals and beach parties take place in various resorts.
