Rehoboth Beach History

Rehoboth Beach is a coastal town located in the state of Delaware, United States. It has a rich history dating back to the 19th century when it was established as a Methodist campsite. Here's a brief overview of the history of Rehoboth Beach:

  • The name "Rehoboth" comes from the Bible, which means "broad places." The name was suggested by the founders of the town who believed that the beach and surrounding area had a broad expanse of land.
  • In 1873, the Rehoboth Beach Camp Meeting Association was established as a religious retreat for Methodists. It was originally located on land leased from the owners of a nearby farm.
  • In 1879, the first boardwalk was built in Rehoboth Beach. It was made of wooden planks and extended 1,500 feet along the beach.
  • In the early 20th century, Rehoboth Beach began to grow as a popular tourist destination. Hotels and restaurants were built to accommodate the influx of visitors.
  • In 1937, the town was officially incorporated as a municipality.
