The South Maui Story

This beachside community has miles of beautiful beaches, and was once an Hawaiian fishing village. Look closely in the brush past Makena and you find ruins of ancient Hawaiian villages and a trail called the "Kings Highway". Remnants of a fishing pond can be seen next to Menehune Shores in front of the National Whale Sanctuary.

Four distinct areas make up South Maui: LaPerouse with rustic lava fields, snorkeling, horseback riding and hiking opportunities. Makena/Wailea with luxury homes, condo's, world class hotels, dining, golf and tennis. Kihei Town is a residential beach side community of great restaurants, shopping centers, movie theatres, boat ramp, playgrounds, community activities and affordable condominiums. Maalaea at the entrance of South Maui features a large boat harbor, the Maui Ocean Center, restaurants and vacation condominiums.

Kihei first started to grow as a town in the late 1960's, along with the development of Wailea. A milestone was reached in 1990 when the state-of-the-art Maui Research and Technology Park was developed to create alternative job opportunities. In 1998 the Maui Ocean Center aquarium opened. South Maui history is showcased on new signs along the beaches and Coastal Corridor maps at the library.

You may want to absorb some local flavor by attending local baseball, football, soccer or roller blade activities at Kalama Park by the whale. Or join in practice exercises and paddle with a canoe club.

Volunteerism is beautifying and improving Kihei and Maalaea. The canoe clubs, Rotary, Kihei Community Association and local businesses are busy planting, building and polishing. Notice the roller blade, skate board and playground facilities at Kalama Park, the Youth Center near Suda Store and the new Community Center on Lipoa. A youth program is replanting the beach area with native plants and seniors have a volunteer beach patrol to help prevent theft.

Getting "Mauied"

Maui is the 1ยบ location for weddings in Hawaii. The unique experience of getting "Mauied" is romantic and exotic. Your taste, ceremonial instincts and budget will dictate your style of wedding. So, start dreaming about what you would really like to have at your wedding. Whatever your wishes, your special day can be accommodated on Maui. Here are some things to consider when thinking about the choices you have in planning your Maui wedding day. A wedding license can be obtained in just one day and there is no waiting period for blood tests. So even if you're on vacation, you can get married on Maui with very little preplanning.

An intimate ceremony on the beach with just the minister and one witness is the simplest romantic wedding. Add a wedding cake, champagne, a photographer and flowers to complete the celebration. Or you may choose one of Maui's many churches like the Hawaiian Makena church or the Grand Wailea wedding chapel. There are many wonderful settings: Private beach properties, a waterfall, a public beach, or, the the more adventurous... underwater, in a helicopter or on horseback. The location choices are endless. What excites your senses? Celebrations are created and remembered with live entertainment and Maui has some of the finest anywhere. One of our more popular authentic Hawaiian recording artists, Al Terry, is also a minister. Debra Lynn & Jerry Eiting offer classic romantic performances straight from Broadway. Or maybe a lone saxophone player on the beach at sunset. Whatever your desire, you can let it enhance your special moment fully on Maui.

A wedding coordinator can guide you and organize all the details like locations, decorated gazebo, flowers, champagne, cake, limo, minister, musicians, apparel, photographer and catering services. For a formal celebration and reception, leave the details to a professional so you can enjoy your big day. Many exceptional coordinators can be recommended at the hotels and through the Hawaiian Wedding Association. Wedding attire customs can be beautifully simple... both bride and groom in white, with the groom wearing a colorful waistband. You can also choose traditional formal wedding attire or something in between. For one of the largest selections on the Island, you can rent or purchase from Ellys at Paradise Plaza. In Hawaiian tradition, the groom wears a Maile leaf lei and the bride a floral Haku lei headband. Cora's Flowers at Azeka Place creates some of the most beautiful in the State. And Casey's BakeHouse wedding cakes are original and delicious. Your wedding formalizes your commitment of love and devotion whether getting married for the first time or exchanging vow renewals. This is your day, so go with your imagination and have your way.

South Maui may become your friendly home away from home too, as couples return often to celebrate and restore their love in the aloha spirit of Maui. Your dreams can come true with a romantic Maui wedding.
