Sierra Blanca Mountain History Sierra Blanca is a mountain range located in the southern Rocky Mountains of the southwestern United States, primarily in New Mexico but also extending into Texas. The mountain range is part of the larger Sacramento Mountains and includes several peaks over 10,000 feet in elevation, including the highest point in southern New Mexico, Sierra Blanca Peak, which rises to an elevation of 11,981 feet. The history of the Sierra Blanca Mountain range dates back thousands of years. The Mescalero Apache tribe considered the mountains to be sacred, and they lived in the surrounding area for generations. Spanish explorers first encountered the region in the 16th century, and the area was later part of the Spanish Empire and then Mexico.
