History & Context
Salcombe History Salcombe is a small town located on the southern coast of Devon, England. The area has a long and interesting history, dating back to prehistoric times. During the Bronze Age, around 2500 BC, the Salcombe area was home to a thriving community of farmers, who built settlements and worked the land. Evidence of their existence can still be seen today, in the form of burial mounds and stone circles. In medieval times, Salcombe became an important center for the fishing and shipping industries. The town grew rapidly, and by the 16th century, it was a thriving port, exporting goods such as wool, wine, and salt. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Salcombe became a haven for smugglers, who used the many coves and inlets around the town to bring contraband goods into the country. This illicit trade brought great wealth to the area, but also led to violent clashes with customs officials and other law enforcement agencies.
