Tiburon History Tiburon is a historic town located in Marin County, California, in the United States. The name Tiburon is Spanish for "shark," and the town is named after the Tiburon Peninsula, which resembles the shape of a shark's fin. The area was originally inhabited by the Coast Miwok Native American tribe for thousands of years before the arrival of Spanish explorers in the late 1700s. In 1834, the Mexican government granted a land grant of 17,000 acres to John Reed, an Irish immigrant who had married a local Miwok woman. Reed named his property Rancho Corte Madera del Presidio, and the land remained in his family until the mid-1800s.
