History
San Candido, also known as Innichen in German, is a picturesque town located in the Dolomites, a mountain range in the northern Italian Alps. It is situated in the South Tyrol region of Italy, near the border with Austria. The history of San Candido is rich and dates back over a thousand years.
Early History: The area around San Candido has been inhabited since ancient times. It was initially settled by the Celts and later came under Roman influence. The Romans established a military presence in the region and built roads, such as the Via Claudia Augusta, which passed through the area.
Medieval Period: During the Middle Ages, the area around San Candido was part of the Holy Roman Empire. The town itself was founded in the 8th century by the Duke of Bavaria, Tassilo III. The Benedictine monastery of San Candido was established around the same time, which played a significant role in the town's development.
