The park has a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial period, when the Edisto Indians lived in the area. The Edisto Indians were known for their expertise in fishing and agriculture and their knowledge of the land. In the 1600s, European settlers began to arrive in the area, and the Edisto Indians were eventually forced to leave their land. Over time, the land changed hands several times, and in the early 1900s, it was purchased by a wealthy businessman named Charles Wyndham. Wyndham built a hunting lodge on the property and used it as a retreat for his friends and family. He also developed a golf course and a beach resort, which became popular with tourists.
