History

Stetson University is a private university located in DeLand, Florida, United States. It was founded in 1883 by John B. Stetson, a hat manufacturer, as a Baptist-affiliated college.

Initially, the university was known as DeLand Academy, but in 1889 it was renamed to John B. Stetson University in honor of its founder. The university was one of the first institutions of higher education in Florida and was chartered as a university in 1930.
