History

Estero is a community located in Lee County, Southwest Florida. Its history dates back to the early 19th century when it was inhabited by Native American Calusa tribes. Later, during the 1880s, the first European settlers arrived in the area.

Here are some key points in the history of Estero, Florida:
  • Early Settlement: The area was settled by pioneers from the Midwest, primarily from Illinois, who established a religious colony known as the Koreshan Unity in 1894. The Koreshans believed in communal living and followed the teachings of Cyrus Teed, who claimed to be the messiah. They built a utopian community with unique architecture and amenities like a bakery, general store, and even an observatory.
  • Koreshan State Historic Site: The Koreshan Unity community thrived for several decades. However, as the founder Cyrus Teed passed away, the community's numbers dwindled. In 1961, the last four members deeded their land to the state of Florida, leading to the establishment of the Koreshan State Historic Site. Today, the site preserves and interprets the remaining structures and history of the Koreshan Unity.
  • Agriculture and Farming: Like many areas in Southwest Florida, agriculture played a significant role in Estero's history. Early settlers engaged in farming and agriculture, growing crops such as tomatoes, citrus fruits, and vegetables. The mild climate and fertile soil made it conducive for agriculture to thrive.
  • Growth and Development: Over the years, Estero saw gradual growth and development, particularly during the latter half of the 20th century and early 21st century. As Florida's population increased, so did the development of residential communities, commercial establishments, and infrastructure in the Estero area.
  • Modern-Day Estero: Today, Estero is a vibrant community that offers a mix of residential neighborhoods, retail centers, recreational opportunities, and access to the beautiful Gulf of Mexico beaches. It is known for its family-friendly atmosphere, quality of life, and various outdoor activities.

Estero's history is fascinating and intertwined with the broader history of Southwest Florida. The area's roots in the Koreshan Unity movement, along with its agricultural heritage, have contributed to shaping the community's unique identity.
