The Troy Public School System is widely recognized as one of the better educational systems in Ohio and for that matter, in the entire country. Expansion magazine has awarded the Troy school system its highest ranking each of the last three rating periods. Our parks and recreational facilities are unsurpassed by any other community our size. We have 24 community parks with a total of 556 acres and we are currently building an 89 acre nature preserve in the middle of town.

While Troy is a modern city we are proud of our past and the traditions that have developed over the last two centuries. Hayner Cultural Center, Overfield Tavern, Hobart Arena, Brukner Nature Center are just a few of the examples that contribute to the unique character of our community.

When many think of the outdoors in Ohio the first image that comes to mind is one of bucolic, rolling farmland dotted with barns and grazing cattle. While that is partly true, outdoor adventure seekers need look no further than Ohio for repelling down majestic bluffs, angling for a champion-sized catch, biking along the more than 500 miles of designated paths and canoeing on Ohio's scenic rivers.

Ohio is a favored destination for boaters from around the country and is actually ranked eighth in the nation for the number of registered boats. With Lake Erie to the north and the Ohio River to the south and an extensive system of rivers and lakes within the state, Ohio's waterways beckon boaters for cruising, fishing, and paddling.

Ohio's Lake Erie is known as the "Walleye Capital of the World" for good reason. Anglers come to the area from spring through the fall in hopes of hooking a world record catch. Lake Erie is the site for several nationally ranked fishing tournaments and boasts not only walleye, but small mouth bass and perch among many other species. During the winter months, ice fishing is popular among the hearty who continue to fish the frozen waters. Ohio also boasts myriad streams and lakes that lure anglers for bass, bluegill, muskellunge and catfish, just to name a few. Fishing charters and guides are available in season.

Fishing, boating, canoeing, hiking and biking can be enjoyed at most of Ohio's 74 State Parks. These magnificent facilities offer a wide range of activities and most have overnight accommodations in marvelous lodge, cabin and cottage accommodations. For a distinctive experience, vacationers can rent a Yurt at several of the parks. The State Parks also offer camping for both tent and RVers to enjoy.



The most remarkable aspect of these Parks is that each offers a unique experience. Whether experiencing the romance of the Malabar Farm State Park, home of Hollywood writer Louis Bromfield and the wedding site for Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, enjoying a lodge nestled in the spectacular Hocking Hill or combing the wetlands of Northwest Ohio, vacationers will surely find a State Park to fit their interests. In 2004, the Lodge at Geneva State Park will open and offer luxury accommodations right on the Lake Erie shore.

Canoeing on Ohio's Rivers has been a popular activity for centuries - both for commerce and for recreation. Many of Ohio's major rivers have private canoe liveries that provide visitors with canoes, a guide and information on the area.

Ohio is also a hunter's haven. More than 95,000 licenses are issued each year for hunters in search of turkey, deer and waterfowl. Ohio's five wildlife districts offer prime hunting grounds. Hunters from across the Midwest and East Coasts come to Ohio in search of the prized buck. In fact, Ohio has a Big Buck Club that is the goal of all deer hunters.

Ohio's natural wonders aren't all found on terra firma. One of the most spectacular natural sites is found in the air. Along Lake Erie, Magee Marsh provides a delicate ecosystem ideal for birds of all species. Majestic bald eagles, pristine geese, brilliant cardinals and graceful swans. Moe than 300 species of birds can be found at Magee Marsh and the adjacent Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. Visitors come, almost as an annual pilgrimage, to view the birds in their natural environment.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Ohio offers more than 500 miles of biking paths, many on converted railroad tracks. The Little Miami Scenic Bikeway is the state's longest at 72 miles, but the possibilities for taking a family on a day or multi-day bike trip through historic towns, arts communities and scenic byways are almost endless. Bike rentals are available at many of the trails.

Hikers need look no further than Hocking Hills and the towering standstone cliffs, deep forested gorges, massive recess caves, winding streams and waterfalls. Hocking Hills is also a tremendous area for vacationers who want the ultimate getaway. Cabins in wooded forests and bed & breakfast inns offer great seclusion amidst a breathtaking backdrop.

Ohio has reclaimed mining and other industrially focused areas for outdoor conservation. The ten reservoirs of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District offer hiking, boating, swimming, camping and fishing. The area also offers biking, camping and scores of outdoor recreation. In Southeast Ohio the ReCreation Lands is a 42,000-acre section once surfaced mined for coal that now offers ponds and lakes for canoeing, kayaking and fishing for bass and catfish.

Ohio is well known as a golf destination with several major PGA sanctioned tournaments and multitude of public and private courses throughout the state. Golfers who like to tee it up and watch it fly can do so at courses ideally suited to their particular skill level. For those who enjoy viewing the finest golfers the following tournaments provide the ideal setting: The Memorial, which takes place at the end of May in Columbus; the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic, which takes place in Youngstown in July; and the NEC Championship held in Akron in August. Vacationers seeking an outdoor vacation that offers a tremendous variety of activities need look no further than Ohio.
