Atlantic Ocean barrier island off the southern shore of Long Island

Fire Island National Seashore comprises approximately 32 miles of barrier island and beaches off the south shore of Long Island. Fire Island can only be accessed by car at Robert Moses State Park on the East and the William Floyd Parkway to Smith-Point County Park on the West. Use of Smith-Point County Park is limited to residents of Suffolk County. Located between the bridges are 9 communities/areas, which are only accessible by ferry. Cars are not permitted on the ferries and all travel on the island is by foot or boat. Within these communities/areas are beautiful beaches, a campground, marinas, hotels, inns, cottage rentals, boutiques, and restaurants.

Ocean Beach - "Capital" and largest community of Fire Island. Ferry access from Bay Shore. An active resort with a beautiful beach, restaurants, dance clubs and boutiques.

Sailor's Haven/Sunken Forest - Operated by the U.S. National Park Service. Has visitor's center, snack bar and public marina. The Sunken Forest is a topograhical wonderland abundant with deer, evergreens, and holly. It is a delight to step out of the darkness of the trail to the bright vastness of the beach and ocean. Cherry Grove - An area known for beach fun. Restaurants and dance clubs. Ferry access from Sayville.

Fire Island Pines - Exclusive resort community. Accommodations, restaurants, dance clubs and boutiques. Ferry access from Sayville.

Saltaire - A residential community popular with families renting homes. Ferry access from Bay Shore.

Fair Harbor - Quiet residential community. Ferry access from Bay Shore.

Kismet - Residential area popular for house rentals. Walking access from Robert Moses State Park or ferry from Bay Shore.

Ocean Bay Park - Casual beach community. Ferry access from Bay Shore.
