A small and beautiful city on Anastasia Island Saint Augustine is located in the northeastern Florida in the seat of St. Johns County. Saint Augustine was founded by the Spanish Explorer Don Pedro de Aviles in 1565 making Saint Augustine the oldest city in the United States. The Spanish in 1672 built Castillo de San Marcos, a massive fortress made of masonry to protect the city. Saint Augustine is a world leader in shrimp boat building and Saint Augustine's principal industry is fishing for shrimp and vegetable canning. In the 1880's Henry Flagler, a railroad tycoon brought his railroad to town and built Saint Augustine into a leading resort city, building the magnificent Spanish - Moorish Revival style Ponce de Leon Hotel. Some sites to see and visit is the oldest house, oldest wooden school house, oldest store, oldest jail and America's first mission "Misson of Nobre De Dios".
