Historically, New Grimsby was an important port for the Isles of Scilly, with a thriving trade in pilchards, salt, and other commodities. The village was also home to a number of fishermen and their families, who would venture out into the treacherous waters around the Isles of Scilly in search of a catch. In the early 20th century, Tresco Island was purchased by the Dorrien-Smith family, who transformed it into a private estate. They built a number of beautiful gardens and landmarks on the island, including the world-famous Tresco Abbey Gardens, which attract thousands of visitors every year.
