Old Grimsby History
Old Grimsby is a village on the northeastern side of Tresco Island in the Isles of Scilly archipelago. It has a long and fascinating history, dating back to at least the Bronze Age.
Archaeological evidence suggests that the island was inhabited by the Bronze Age people who built the nearby burial chamber known as the Innisidgen Tomb. Later, during the Iron Age and Roman periods, Tresco Island was likely used as a trading hub and possibly even as a base for Roman garrisons.
In the medieval period, Tresco Island was owned by the Augustinian Tavistock Abbey in Devon, and Old Grimsby was an important center of activity on the island. The village was home to a number of fishermen and farmers, and it served as a trading post for goods brought to the island from the mainland.
