The battle was a confrontation between a group of Apaches led by Geronimo and the U.S. Army. The Apaches had taken refuge on W Mountain and were pursued by the army, which was attempting to capture or kill them. The battle lasted for several days and ended with the Apaches escaping into Mexico. W Mountain is also notable for the large letter "W" that is visible on its western face. The "W" stands for Western New Mexico University, which is located in Silver City. The tradition of painting the "W" on the mountain dates back to the 1920s and is still maintained by students and alumni of the university today.
