Natural, Historic, Cultural Resources Enrich Travel Experience

North Carolina is a diverse vacation destination with sunny island beaches, abundant history and waterfalls thundering down the slopes of the highest peaks in the eastern United States. Our people are just as diverse and interesting as the state itself. Whether flying in or driving, you will find North Carolina is a state of enchantment.

The Outer Banks, a 130-mile necklace of barrier islands along our northern coast, offers untamed beaches, drop-dead gorgeous scenery and North Carolina-patented hospitality. The entire coastline of NC is 300-plus miles dotted with picturesque lighthouses from Manteo to Bald Head Island – and they are as welcoming as our people.

After you have explored this coastline, fished the waters or braved the pounding surf in a sea kayak, it’s time for a trip through history. Visit Beaufort, with buildings dating back to the mid-1700s and Morehead City, home to one of North Carolina’s three aquariums. Kure Beach and Manteo are home to the other two. Tryon Palace Historic Site and Gardens, a collection of elegant Georgian buildings in New Bern, was constructed in 1770 as a residence for Royal Governor William Tryon.

Wilmington set the stage for much Civil War drama. Today, it sets the stage for film industry. Famous faces and movie crews are often seen at work in this historic town. There is much to see and do along our coast, but our heartland beckons, too. For the fond of fairways, the 500-plus courses around the state feature top-ranked, pristine golf courses. In fact, historic Pinehurst is arguably the American birthplace of golf.

History comes alive in North Carolina. The state is home to nearly a dozen outdoor dramas and many other lively attractions. Old Salem and many of our state’s historic sites are in the heartland. Slightly off the beaten path, discover the soothing cadence of life in the rural heartland. It’s a spiritual tonic for vacationers on a mission to restore a sense of balance. Another facet of this fascinating region is found in our vibrant cities where shopping is a popular sport, and antiquing has been raised to high art.

The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area is home to some of the most prestigious – and most beautiful – university campuses in the country. There, the finest minds are honed and some of the best college basketball is played. The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro has been called one of the best natural habitat facilities in the world. And, in nearby Seagrove, some of the world’s best potters ply their craft, and have for more than 200 years. Although you may think that barbecue is a verb, in North Carolina it is a noun to be eaten in large quantities along with hushpuppies. Great barbecue can be found all across the state, but Lexington is the Mecca for this regional delicacy.

Charming small heartland towns beseech you to stay, but it is time to begin exploring higher reaches. Perhaps the best place to start is on the scenic road that connects our mountain regions: the Blue Ridge Parkway. From the northern mountains, the parkway winds its way past scenic state parks, including New River, Stone Mountain and Doughton. An engineering marvel, the Linn Cove Viaduct, takes you into the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area. Here, you will find some of North Carolina’s most spectacular hiking trails.

Fishing, canoeing, whitewater rafting and camping are perfect ways to enjoy natural mountain wonders. So is an early summer visit to Roan Mountain, the world’s largest natural gardens of crimson-purple rhododendron. Spring and summer festivals give you an opportunity to listen to our foot-tapping mountain music, sample some of our regional cuisine or see our famous handmade crafts. And, of course, all of this is only the beginning.

Two of the most interesting homes in all of America - George Vanderbilt’s 250-room Biltmore House and Carl Sandburg’s Connemara – are here. Trout abound and more than 300 waterfalls have been counted in these mountains. Whitewater Falls – at 411 feet – is the highest waterfall on the East Coast. Ride on one of our mountain biking trails and you might discover your own private waterfall.

A feeling of deja vu may nag at you in these hills. It could be that you are remembering the awe-inspiring scenery that has been featured in movies like The Last of the Mohicans and Dirty Dancing. No matter where North Carolina’s trails and roads take you, you will enjoy a wealth of experiences that will make your visit here unforgettable. You may leave North Carolina after vacationing here, but one thing’s for sure, North Carolina will never leave you.
