Venice and Gondola ride

Arrival in Piazza San Marco, the political and religious center of the city during the period of the Serenissima Republic. From here visit the Doge's Palace (private residence of the Doge, seat of the Government and of the Court of Justice). On the first floor were the offices, on the second four large rooms where the meetings of the members of some of the government institutions were held, as well as the private apartments of the Doge, while on the third there were the halls of the great assembly.

The original palace was built in the 9th century in the Byzantine style, but was then destroyed several times by fires, until in the 14th century it was decided to rebuild it in the Gothic style. The guide will give you curious information about the foundation of Venice, starting from the invasion of Attila who forced the Venetian population to seek refuge among the islands of the lagoon and arriving until 1797, when the last Doge Ludovico Manin handed over power to the French.

The guide will also accompany us through the wonderful rooms with the magnificent ceiling decorations and the famous paintings by Tiziano, Tiepolo, Tintoretto, Carpaccio and Veronese. At the end of the visit, from the Sala della Magistratura you will pass through the Bridge of Sighs, a covered structure above the canal, which unites the palace and the ancient prison The Basilica of San Marco, with a Greek cross plan, built to house the remains of St. Mark the Evangelist, who were stolen from Alexandria, occupies the second part of our visit.

The facades show traces of different architectural styles and in the main facade you can admire the Four Horses, taken in Byzantium in 1204. At the end of the visit, guests will take a 40-minute gondola ride along part of the Grand Canal and the narrowest canals around the San Marco area.
