Jesolo, the first Town in Europe with IPP

Jesolo is the first town in Europe to launch the pilot project of integrated policy applied to tourism. "Jesolo IPP" (IPP stands for integrated product policy) represents the most important operation begun so far in the environmental policy context, at a local and European level; a project that will allow a more efficient implementation of the environmental policy instruments and an increase of the quality of the touristic services, involving in the national context the ANPA, the National Agency for the Environmental Protection, and in a local context, as partners, the Jesolo Hoteliers Association and the Local Tourist Board.

"Jesolo IPP" was presented for the first time at the Hotel Equipment Exhibition, and was lately present at the International Tourism Exhibition in Miland, Rome, in a meeting organized by the ANPA and the "Bocconi" University of Miland, and in Bruxelles where it was officially presented to the European Commission. It is the European Commission the institution mostly involved in the application of the Integrated Product Policies, considered foundamental guiding lines for the development of policies aimed at improving the evironmental impact, connected to the production and use of products in the whole life cycle context, through an innovative approach that coordinates and integrates the today most spread instruments (Ecolabel and eco-marks, consumers infromation, EMAS and ISO 14001, etc.).

That is why the beginning of this pilot project in Jesolo represents not only an advantage for the town but also a testing field for the future applications. Experimenting the model in a strategic important area from the touristic point of view means realizing an exemplary case of IPP application to tourism in relation to other sites and territories in a national and communitary context.

After the achievement of the environmental cerificate ISO 14001, which brought a concrete improvement of the environmental management, at least for what concerns the Municipality, "Jesolo IPP" will be applied to the whole territory of Jesolo, according to the entire cycle of the touristic service. Choosing as reference the most "crowded" months (June, July and August), that is the months where the environmental impact is at its hightest levels, the following activities will be analized: transports (arrivals and departures from the Town), overnights (in hotels, apartments and lodging-houses, hostels, campings and private houses), the touristic promotion and information services, the restaurants, the transport on the territory (both with private and public means of transport), the management of the territory and of the green areas (including water and power supply, urban water collection and depuration systems and urban rubbish management systems), trade, leisure time and events. The project due to last for three years will end with the realization of a model that will value the environmental impact in the whole municipal territory, a model that will be the base for starting the operations of improvement in the most important sectors.

Mr Mayor Renato Martin said "For Jesolo starts a new challenge that has no political attitude or ideologist tendencies. The IPP project follows a difficult and ambitious path the Municipal Administration began a few years ago, a path that will have to bring a new environmental consciousness and a new way of living tourism".

1st Course of History of the East Veneto Culture

"Culture, dialects, tradition and interventions on the environment": last 25th January began the first course of history of the culture of the East Veneto that has the aim to update and train school heads, teachers, students and citizens, promoted by the Municipality of Jesolo and by the Marciana Library of Venice, supported by the Local Education Authority in Venice. The initiative is free and open to everyone, it takes place in Jesolo until April and is articulated in a series of meetings of 2,5 hours each. The participants can request at the end of the course an attendance certificate for every single meeting.

Among the spokesmen there are univerity professors and cultural operators: prof.Gherardo Ortalli, professor of Medieval Hostory at the Ca' Foscari University in Venice, Prof. Gino Benzoni, Alessandro Scarsella, of the Marciana Library of Venice, Prof. Roberto Togni of the University of Trento and Dott. Dino Casagrande of the Civic Museums of the Municipality of San Donà di Piave.

Among the subjects: "The period of the land reclamation", "Linguistic reality in the East Veneto", "The Dogado", "The thinking of Silvio Trentin", "The thinking of Giacomo Noventa", "Museum Projects".

Tourism Building (congress centre): a growing facility

30.000 people present in less than a year since the first event took place in the Centre. The stocktaking for the Tourism Building managed by the Jesolo Turismo, is encouraging. The facility showes not only to have the right credentials for giving new impulse to Jesolo touristic offer, but also for gaining its own space in the national and international congress context. A strategic position, 5.000 seats, a 15.000 square metres surface articulated in wide spaces, equipped with proper services for specific activities that can change when necessary and host at the same time, several events. These are the strong elements that worked as presentation to the touristic operators present at the BTC (Congress Tourism Fair) in Florence.

Back in the 90s Jesolo chose to aim at total quality also in its town planning programme. Through a competition for ideas, Kenzo Tange was appointed to prepare a Master Plan for the town which was then translated into the General Town Plan. Nowadays Calzavara's administration is realizing this great project of urban planning and marketing of the territory. Through innovative timetables and methods it supports institutions, entrepreneurs and citizens that contribute to this renovation which will revolutionize and improve the planning and quality of life of the town.
