The Secrets Of Strunjan

Our tiny town is a small, dispersed settlement that extends alongside the Slovenian coast between the cities of Izola and Koper. From topographical viewpoint the surface looks pleasantly undulating and is composed of flysch and sedimentary rock. Precipitous flysch tectonic walls, named also the cliffs, bestow on the northern part of the chore particulary formidable character as the earth surface abysmally plunges into the sea. At some places the cliffs reach the height of 80 meters. This part of the seaside was in 1990 proclaimed the natural coastal reserve. It extends over an area of 160 hectares.

Besides these four kilometres of our coast, that display the uniqueness not to be encountered on the shores of the entire Adriatic Sea, we have to mention also the characteristic fauna and flora typical for this micro-environment. On the very edges of the cliffs as well as in their cracks and crevices we may come across the authentic submediterranean plant life (the black beech, yellow blossoming Spanish broom, myrtle, sesleria). The salt pans of Strunjan represented and reflected the economical prosperity and glory of Piran and surroundings in the Serrenissima.

In Strunjan you can see the church of the Assumption – on the night from 14 to 15 August in the historically remote year of 1512, two vineyard watchmen were, according to the legend, witnessing the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The visitor to Strunjan may also opt for many a pleasant stroll, picking from a variety of charming foot-paths. In quite a short span of time he may reach the touristically eventful Portorož just marching through the tunnel of the former railway that once connected the cities of Trieste and Poreč. Setting out from Salinera he may take another stroll along the seashore thus reaching Fiesa or even Piran. In case he turns his steps in the opposite direction, the coastline path will lead him all the way to Izola.

Izola – The Mediterranean At Your Doorstep

The crooked narrow streets of this charming old town contain a disparate wealth of attractive and interesting architecture from centuries past. The engaging portals of the old stone houses divulge something of the history of this former island settlement, and a number of traces speak of the half-millennium-long era of Roman colonisation. Izolas`s picturesque shops and pleasant bars are indeed enticing, while the scent of rosemary and stone pine and the sound of the roaring sea waves allure one to explore a little further. The leisurely tempo of Izola – enlivened by numerous events, festivities, old fishing traditions and sporting events – is guaranteed not only to relax, but also put a spring in one`s step.

Koper – Along The Paths Of The Medieval Koper

Older chroniclers and historians place the beginnings of Koper – then called Iustinopolis – into the second half of the sixth century, thanks to trading and political connections with the Aquileia patriarchs and Venice, Koper became one of the leading towns on the Istrian peninsula (Caput Histriae). Towards the end of the Middle Ages, its many advantages over other Istrian places, of both strategic and commercial significance, secured it the position of the Istrian capital within the Venetian Republic. A favorable strategic position of the Koper island made possible the development of a powerful, fortified medieval city. Later on, its convenient location with regard to traffic routes and defense of the city, and direct contacts with the immediate and distant hinterlands, influenced the shaping of an initially compactly built town which in the 15th and 16th century expanded to occupy the entire island. A walk around the old city center will reveal many interesting sites that speak the language of various artistic styles which shaped the portrait of this lively and attractive seaside town through its long history.

Ankaran

The wider Ankaran area is believed to have been populated from a very early era, since numerous remains of Roman settlements (villae rusticae) were discovered here. A favourable climate and pleasant natural environment led to the area being earmarked for spa tourism at the end of the 19th century. Nowadays, Ankaran, with Hotel Adria (the former monastery of St. Nicholas), which contains a campsite, numerous sports playgrounds, pools and auxiliary facilities, is the largest tourist complex in the Koper comune. It attracts numerous tourists and visitors from Slovenia, as well as the neighbouring Italy and other countries. Ankaran has the longest and for many people the most attractive sandy beaches in Slovenia. Walk past olive plantations and vineyards in this tourist town will really make your day.
