Recreation, Tourism and Entertainment

Kentucky has one of the nation's most outstanding state park systems. Resort park settings range from scenic mountains and streams in eastern Kentucky to fabulous man-made lakes in western Kentucky. Accommodations are varied and facilities may include golf courses, swimming pools, beaches, lodges, restaurants, tennis courts, meeting rooms, amphitheaters and nature centers. Many state parks and shrines are developed around historic themes.

The Department of Parks provides a central reservation service to assist travelers in making reservations at Kentucky State Resort Park lodges. The Kentucky State Fair, held in Louisville each August, is the country's largest air-conditioned fair. The 10-day event features contests, exhibits, and entertainment by major performing artists. Most of Kentucky's counties also host county fairs during the summer months, and community-sponsored festivals and celebrations offer a variety of recreational opportunities across the state from March through December. The Kentucky Tourism Cabinet distributes, at no charge, an official Kentucky Highway Map, as well as information on travel, recreation, and special events in Kentucky.

Arts and cultural offerings are available throughout Kentucky. Actors Theatre of Louisville, a regional theatre with a national reputation, produces classic, contemporary, and original plays. The Kentucky Center for the Arts is a regional showcase for nationally known entertainers and performers. The center is located in downtown Louisville, and offers two performance halls seating 2,400 persons and 610 persons. The Kentucky Center for the Arts hosts productions by the Kentucky Opera Association, the Louisville Ballet, the Louisville Orchestra, and Broadway touring companies. The Louisville Orchestra has a national reputation for its performances of contemporary orchestral works. Performances of the Lexington Ballet, concerts by the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, and productions of Broadway tours are held at the Lexington Opera House. Bowling Green, Paducah, Owensboro, Ashland, Frankfort, Richmond, Murray, Covington and several other smaller communities have subscription series for concerts and lectures. A professional theater company performs at Horse Cave, and dinner theaters are located in several cities. Outdoor dramas with historic themes are performed in the summer at many of the state parks.
