The Southeastern Region of the United States

Kentucky is located at the center of a 28-state distribution area, virtually equidistant from the northern manufacturing belt, the eastern seaboard, and the southern gulf ports. Kentucky's transportation system facilitates the distribution of manufactured goods and raw materials to this massive industrial and consumer market. This 28-state area, which contains 67% of the nation's population, accounted for 68% of the personal income, 67% of the retail sales, and 72% of the manufacturing employment of the United States in 1992.

Highway - Kentucky's highway system is composed of approximately 70,000 miles (113,000 kilometers) of federal, state, and local roads. Five interstate highways and seven state parkways combined provide about 1,400 miles (2,268 kilometers) of multilane limited-access highways. This integrated system of highways connect Kentucky with all major commercial centers in the eastern and central United States.

Water - Kentucky has about 1,100 miles (1,770 kilometers) of commercially navigable waterways which provide an expedient means of transportation of bulk materials to inland markets and major ports on the Gulf of Mexico. The Ohio River alone flows 664 miles (1,068 kilometers) along the northern border of Kentucky. In response to the growing importance of water transportation to Kentucky, six public riverports have begun operations, and three more riverport facilities are under development.

Rail - Railroads serve Kentucky with 2,900 miles of track, including 2,447 miles of class I track. The major railroads serving the state have connections with the major rail trunk line routes and major commercial centers in the nation. The major railroads operating in the state include CSX Transportation, Inc.; Norfolk Southern Corporation (Southern Railway, Norfolk and Western Railway, and Cincinnati, New Orleans, and Texas Pacific Railway); Illinois Central Railroad; and Paducah and Louisville Railroad. Intermodal service is becoming increasingly important to many distributors and is now available at several facilities in Kentucky. Passenger service is provided by AMTRAK at Maysville, Catlettsburg, and Fulton, Kentucky.

Air - Five commercial airports provide scheduled airline service in Kentucky: Erlanger (Covington/Cincinnati area), Lexington, Louisville, Owensboro, and Paducah. Out-of-state airports near Kentucky are: Evansville, Indiana, serving the Henderson area; Huntington, West Virginia, serving the Ashland area; Nashville, Tennessee, serving the Bowling Green area; and Bristol, Tennessee, and Knoxville, Tennessee, both serving the southeastern part of the state. International flights are available at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, located at Erlanger in northern Kentucky. Major airlines serving Kentucky include American, Delta, Northwest, TWA, United, and USAir. In addition, more than a dozen regional airlines serve the short haul routes.

United Parcel Service (UPS) operates its major international hub at Staniford Field in Louisville. DHL Worldwide Express maintains a major hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in Erlanger, Kentucky.
